America Cantat is the premier cultural music festival of the Americas, and is the only noncompetitive choir festival to unite singers, conductors, and festival choirs from North, Central, and South America in a ten-day cultural and musical immersion program. The Festival began in 1992 in Argentina as celebration of the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s landing on the island he would call San Salvador (part of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas today). Now, 23 years later, America Cantat continues to unite people from all over the world in a celebration of choral artistry, cultural exchange, and unforgettable experiences.
The America Cantat is modeled after its sister festival, Europa Cantat. These festivals, in conjunction with Africa Cantat and Asia Pacific Cantat, constitute a worldwide movement of promoting peace and understanding through intercultural and artistic events. It is with great excitement that America Cantat continues these initiatives in 2016.
America Cantat 8 will take place August 21-31, 2016, at the Atlantis Paradise Island resort in Nassau, Bahamas. Organización America Cantat proudly partners with the American Choral Directors Association and the Ministry of Tourism of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas to host this international choir festival. Join in the celebration and immerse yourself in the music of the Americas!
America Cantat first took place in Argentina in 1992, and again in 1996. Venezuela hosted America Cantat 3 in 2000, and Mexico welcomed the Festival for its fourth iteration in 2004. Since then, it has become a triennial event, hosted by Cuba in 2007 (America Cantat 5), Brazil in 2010 (America Cantat 6), and Colombia in 2013 (America Cantat 7). This will be the first time America Cantat will be hosted in an English-speaking country and presented by the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA).
Over ten days, singers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in overlapping five-day-long workshops, led by some of the most prestigious choral clinicians in the world. During these workshops participants rehearse choral pieces indigenous to all previous America Cantat host countries. At the end of the Festival, the workshops present joint concerts to showcase this music. In addition to performing in the workshop concerts, choirs who attend America Cantat as Participant Choirs have performance opportunities in and around Nassau. It is important to note, however, that you do not have to travel with your whole choir to participate in the Cantat! You can bring a smaller chamber choir, section leaders, or even just yourself (“Come Solo!”), and still take advantage of all of the Festival events.
In the evenings, participants are invited to attend Gala Concerts, performed by acclaimed choirs from each host country and our sister festival, Europa Cantat. Additionally, there are Opening and Closing Ceremonies, hosted by The Bahamas, a mid-week Dinner & Beach Party, and time to explore the island, relax on the beach, and take part in excursions to fully experience all that The Bahamas has to offer. This is a can’t-miss event for anyone passionate about choral music and cultural exchange.
